Be Happy: Jacob’s Journey to Healing

For privacy reasons, client names have been changed.

“I want to move past this, but I can’t” the young man, whose father committed suicide when he was 10 years old, said with a kind of sadness in his eyes that made me want to cradle him like a child and hold him until he felt better.

Let’s call him Jacob.

Jacob had spent 18 months in rehab for all sorts of behavioral problems. He wanted to numb his pain. The loss of his father in such a manner caused him to feel rejected and unworthy.

Jacob explained to me that he inherited a substantial amount of money and as soon as he completed school, he stared working in the business his father built.

Being a bright young man with a strong personality, lots of money and even more pain resulted in Jacob anaesthetizing his hurt with drugs and alcohol, and feeling a bit better about himself in those delirious moments. He felt that he wasn’t enough for his father to stay, and to him, it meant that he wasn’t a worthy human being.

It broke my heart to hear how the experience in rehab dehumanized him and made him feel even worse about himself. He became suicidal and luckily checked himself out.

Jacob was coping with his work, but the nagging, ever-present feeling of abandonment was his unwelcome companion, the constant reminder of his dark story.

When Jacob and I started working, I had no idea what the cause of his hurt was. I don’t need to know the content of what people are dealing with, and as I’ve said before, if they feel they want to share, they are welcome, and if they don’t, they are also welcome.

Jacob started the session with a seriousness. At first, he was a bit reserved, but relaxed when I explained how it works and that everything he experiences or remembers is private. He sat with his eyes closed and followed my instructions, when he unexpectedly started laughing. Sensing my surprise, he told me that his father was there with him. I didn’t know what had happened yet, so I responded with “oh, this is wonderful!”.

Jacob enthusiastically relayed what his father was sharing with him. The most important message was “Jacob, I had a great life and love you and your mom very much. I made stupid decisions that hurt you and I’m sorry. Please don’t feel like I abandoned you. Live your life my boy and be happy. Make a great life for yourself and I’m always here when you need me. You will recognize my presence each time you see a beautiful sunset”.

They spent a few minutes talking privately, greeted and Jacob returned his focus to me. Now, he was beaming with joy and relief. He didn’t want to end up making the same bad decisions as his father, and turned his life around.

Jacob is now a happy, driven young man who is a fountain of love and hope. His fear of death and his feeling of abandonment disappeared completely.

Jacob lives his life fully, as it should be.
